Trauma and Resuscitation International Group for Experimentation and Research

Background

Multidisciplinary Traumatology is a broad field that encompasses the overlapping practices of Anesthesiology, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Pain Management and Critical Care. The International Trauma Anesthesia and Critical Care Society (ITACCS) promotes the development of Traumatologists, being a forum for sharing ideas and techniques for the management of trauma patients and providing an educational framework to train and nurture trauma care specialists.

ITACCS is a recognized leader in the multidisciplinary field of trauma education. Its leadership and membership are diverse, counting more than 1,000 members from more than 40 countries. ITACCS coordinates continuing medical education programs and conferences and publishes TraumaCare, its own scholarly journal. ITACCS supports research through its Research Awards Program. The Society has unrivaled capabilities to marshal extraordinary intellectual resources and multinational governmental support, concentrating international technology and information transfer to benefit various projects. ITACCS recognizes that extramural funding is increasingly difficult to obtain and increasingly complex to administer. These difficulties are exacerbated by the increasing demands on clinician scientists along with diminishing non-clinical time.

Mission

The mission of the Trauma Research International Group for Experimentation and Research (TRIGER) is an extension of the original mission of ITACCS. TRIGER coordinates the development of policies pertaining to trauma care and disseminates related information as needed. TRIGER improves health and quality of life by assisting in groundbreaking trauma research, with particular emphasis on multi-center studies. TRIGER aids trauma researchers by providing a clearinghouse whereby they can interact with each other and with pharmaceutical and device industries.

Program

TRIGER fosters the growth of coordinated research within the field of trauma. Just as trauma medicine encompasses diverse fields of medicine, TRIGER is committed to an interdisciplinary approach to trauma research. This approach fosters interactions between Traumatologists in a variety of fields and connects trauma medicine to industry. TRIGER provides an institutional infrastructure that encourages and supports its physician scientists by serving as an interface between clinical investigators and sponsors of clinical trials of drugs and devices, outcomes/quality improvement, and quality of life studies. TRIGER conducts and administers both federally funded clinical trials and industry-sponsored trials through research, education, intervention, and health promotion, applying the highest ethical and scientific standards. As a central clearinghouse, TRIGER facilitates communication within the trauma community. TRIGER offers on-line research information and direct technical support for the clinical investigative community.

Summary

TRIGER provides a high level of support services for clinical trials to help investigators meet the demands of industrial sponsors and provides the infrastructure necessary to support clinical research. By fostering academic collaboration, effecting communication with industrial sponsors, and promoting a focused and structured administrative process, TRIGER conducts research and translates the resulting information into treatment modalities that improve patient care and health. TRIGER will improve health and quality of life by assisting in groundbreaking trauma research, with particular emphasis on multi-center studies.

Trauma medicine encompasses diverse fields of medicine, and TRIGER takes pride in its commitment to an interdisciplinary approach to trauma research. This approach fosters interaction between Trauamatologists in a variety of fields and between trauma medicine and industry.

TRIGER coordinates developments in trauma care research; identifies gaps in scientific knowledge; stimulates and monitors extramural research; keeps abreast of scientific developments and public policy as they pertain to trauma care, presentation, and treatment; and disseminates service-based information to the public, media, and policy makers.
